Gifts : Mothers Reflect on How Children with Down Syndrome Enrich Their Lives

The Gifts Outreach program provides complimentary copies of Gifts to organizations which serve parents facing a new diagnosis of Down syndrome for their child, either prenatally or postnatally. We believe that the stories in the book provide a vital companionship and support for such parents.

1st day of second grade

Unlike the first day of first grade, momma didn't cry! But they did have welcome to school chicken nuggets for the first lunch. Our elementary knows how to please a kid!

Too excited to get a good picture!

He made it through and so did the teachers so that is a good thing!

T'was the Night Before 2nd Grade

T’was the night before 2nd grade
And all through the house
Only one creature was stirring
It’s Seger chasing a mouse.

Nash is all nestled
Inside of his bed
With visions of that horrid Touchmath
Dancing in his head.

When out in our cul de sac
There arose such a clatter
We sprang up at 6:15 am
To see what was the matter!

It’s the middle school bus
Arriving SO early
The neighbor mom is mad,
Her 5th grade daughter is so surly.

It’s the first day of school!
Yeah! Lets all arise!
Get out of bed and wipe
The Sleep from our eyes.

Dad start the coffee
Mom find the shower
Nash get dressed
Too early is this hour!

But its here, its second grade
And be ready we will.
As the time only flies by
If only it would stand still.

As Nash gets on the bus
Waves goodbye and signs
“I love you” though the window
We know he will shine.

And so will your kids
If given the chance.
So Happy New School Year to all and
“I Hope You Dance!”

1st day of 1st grade.......he made it through!

now only 179 days to go!

He came home so enthused, so energetic and so full of stories! He said he sat by Edy at lunch, ate chicken nuggets, played outside.....hmmm no mention of any school work. His teacher sent a note that he had a great day (exclamation mark inserted) and didn't have to turn a "card"...they use a color card system for discipline for him just like all the kids.

Here are pics of leaving for the bus, and the bus coming, his excitement, and yes, tears were flowing. But they were Mom's tears.

Kindergarten Update

Wow. That's all I can say. I have been blown away by Nash's wonderful reports from both Kindergarten classes. (He goes to public school in the morning, then Goddard K in the afternoon.)

It was a rough start though as Nash got the stomach flu (we will be dealing with 40 immune systems this year- about 20 kids in each K class, all different kids)the Saturday after school started, and was sick until he returned to school on that next Thursday. Then Dad and Mom got the flu too. Honestly, I will NEVER take my health for granted again. That was some awful bug!

So while he's officially only had 4 full days, we will take 'em! We've heard he knows most all the kids by name (I still want to make my annual picture book with all the kids pictures and names though), listens, follows directions, and hasn't had behavior issues!

He is learning to count by 2's, learning popcorn sight words, and counted to 20 with me not skipping a beat when we made potroast with 20 small carrots. That's our boy!

The best part? He's like his momma; he LOVES SCHOOL! He also loves taking the bus, which is the highlight of his day I think.

All in all, life is good.

Bye mom and dad!!

Bye mom and dad!!

the last picture taken; too many emotions running! Of course I followed the bus, and found out I was following the wrong bus once I got to school!! I followed the bus from our main road, but apparently Nash's bus turned north before I saw it, and I followed another bus right to the elementary school
I waited (in hiding) to watch Nash come off the bus, but no Nash! (feel my heart pounding?) and then a mom from TBall this summer came up behind me to see her son get off the bus and head to his K class - then I saw Nash get off that same bus. Whew. Nash was holding hands with a first grade boy that came to our house and offered to walk Nash and our neighbors boy who was also in first grade (his first year in public school) to class. There they were; three boys holding hands on their way into school. Nash wanted nothing to do with the aide at the entrance that was there to assist him to class- he wanted his buds. So the boys walked to Nash's class!

I have a batch of cookies to bake!

We did it! Congrats to you our big boy - who also went to bed at 7:30 tonight!

My buddy and neighbor, he's a first grader!

Here comes the bus!
