Gifts : Mothers Reflect on How Children with Down Syndrome Enrich Their Lives

The Gifts Outreach program provides complimentary copies of Gifts to organizations which serve parents facing a new diagnosis of Down syndrome for their child, either prenatally or postnatally. We believe that the stories in the book provide a vital companionship and support for such parents.

Why I contributed to the GIFTS book.........

This is why....to give one perspective. This is too what I believe

Convinced that more couples would choose to continue their pregnancies if they better appreciated what it meant to raise a child with Down syndrome, a growing group of parents are seeking to insert their own positive perspectives into a decision often dominated by daunting medical statistics and doctors who feel obligated to describe the difficulties of life with a disabled child.

Choosing to have a retarded child is a moral atrocity. There's no way to get around the fact that Down syndrome causes suffering in everyone involved. The parents who support bringing more people burdened with this illness into the world only want to extend their and their children's suffering to everyone else. They should be named for what they are - evil.

Every child should be loved and valued - but a fetus is not a child until he or she is born - and what kind of perverted monster do you have to be to want your children to suffer their entire life? Only the religious dogma behind the hypocritical "culture of life" is capable of sinking people to this level.

You know I always tell people when you are out here on the internet you give access to all the goof balls and people with other issues that surf the net.

Well as we all can see we have one of those that posted above. You have to have a blogger account to post comment on Mauzy's blog so we all know this person blogs out there but does not want us to be able to have any debate on thier blog. So brave....and oh so typical.

Sorry to Anonymous for whatever issues or guilt you are dealing with that caused your post and hope you can reach out and get the help you need.

And all that know me know I am pro-choice and not part of the religious right so no point in debating that part with me either.

Mauzy is my wife and I am very proud of her work with the gifts book and very proud of her for being the Mom to my very cool and very amazing son who just happens to have Down syndrome.

PEACE DUDE!

Thank you for posting your views. I purposely don't have my blog set on "private" so to allow anonymous posts so we can see all views. Anonymouse- Your view is exactly why the GIFTS book was written; to allow those that are uneducated about Down syndrome to see/read about the actual lives the families and children/adult live. It is not a religious pro-life book. And again you are wrong in the suffering part. We have no burden or suffering in our life. Your suffering however does show, and an offer to send a copy of GIFTS to you would - I am sure - be laughed at. I am sure Peter Singer would be proud.

Hey I am glad you tracked down the 'clanging gong' aka 'vexation to our spirits' - rational debate is one thing but to yell and run .... that is another. Exactly why Gifts is such a GREAT idea. Thanks for hosting the debate.
